Veszprém-Balaton 2023 InterUrbán: Yasuhiro Suzuki “Nature’s Time Metronome” Installation

Nature’s Time Metronome will be exhibited at “Veszprém-Balaton 2023”. The city of Veszprém, Hungary, and the surrounding area, including the Bakony Mountains and Lake Balaton region, have been selected as the European Capital of Culture (ECoC) for the year 2023. The “Veszprém-Balaton 2023” program will feature a series of cultural and artistic events throughout the year, including the InterUrban program, in which 25 cities in 25 countries will host events that will change every two weeks throughout the year. This time, I was invited by one of these cities, InterUrban: Hamamatsu. Veszprém is a city with rich nature and historical landscapes, and is also known as the City of Music, designated as a UNESCO Creative City in the field of music. In such a city overflowing with music, Nature’s Time Metronome will be exhibited.
The Nature’s Time Metronome, which can set the round-trip time from 1 second to 10,000 years, will be moved and installed at various locations in Veszprém. The time that flows between the structures at each location and the mountains and lakes seen in the distance, the time indicated by clocks, and the sensory time of the people who are there, all flow in different ways. I would like to ask people about the inner time felt by the viewer of the metronome.

Veszprém-Balaton 2023

What is the meaning of time? How do we understand the significance of minutes, hours, or even days? To what extent can time be accelerated or decelerated, and how can we capture the unique tempo and rhythm of a city?
Yasuhiro Suzuki, a Japanese artist, utilizes ordinary objects to delve into these inquiries, expanding our perception and provoking contemplation. As he arrives in Veszprém, he brings with him a metronome—an instrument that prompts questions and offers insights into the passage of time and our subjective experience of it. Seek out the metronome and allow yourself the freedom to immerse in the exploration. Take your time!(Veszprém-Balaton 2023 web -InterUrban: Yasuhiro Suzuki metronome installation (JP))

Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art, Israel Solo exhibition “BLINKING – Waiting for the Future”

Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art, Israel Solo exhibition “BLINKING – Waiting for the Future”

My solo exhibition will be held at the Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art* in Haifa, Israel. The exhibition is curated by Etty Glass Gissis, curator of the Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art.
The exhibition is organized around the themes of “language,” “time,” “Mitate,”* and “waiting.”
I will be exhibiting “Blinking Leaves” for the second time in Israel, and “inter-reflection”, one of my early representative works. I will also be exhibiting about 60 new works, including “Aerial Luggage Bag”, ” Bucket Puzzle”, “Present/Past” and “Here/There” made in Hebrew, which have been reconstructed for this exhibition, as well as new works. This will be my first solo exhibition at an overseas museum.

In the patio, where five pine trees grow high in the sky, “Unexpected Little Cuckoo” will be exhibited. The work, which was created in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Hamamatsu City’s municipal government, was inspired by Tokugawa Ieyasu’s phrase, “If it doesn’t sing, let’s wait until it does,” and was recreated to fit the courtyard of the Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art.
In this exhibition, entitled “Blinking: The Meeting Place of the Future,” I am pleased to have the opportunity to think and feel anew in Israel the encounter between people and people, between people and nature, and the disappearance of the world the moment we close our eyes, which is hidden in “waiting” for something.

Although the new coronavirus is still spreading, if you have a chance to visit Haifa before the spring of 2022, I hope you will visit there.

*1. Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art, Haifa Museums
The Museum of Japanese Art on the crest of Mount Carmel is dedicated exclusively to the preservation and exhibition of Japanese art works, and is the only one of its kind in the Middle East. The Museum is a municipal foundation, set up in 1959, on the initiative of Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) from Holland, and Abba Khoushy (1898-1969), Mayor of Haifa at that time. The Museum aims to allow Israelis to learn and become acquainted with Japanese culture; to promote mutual understanding between Israel and Japan, and between East and West; and to encourage research into the arts and culture of Japan.

*2. A traditional Japanese allusive method of looking at one thing as another, a point of view known as the Japanese garden and tea ceremony.

Zip-Fastener Ship-Between Water- This fall, Zip-Fastener Ship will “open” Sumida River!

Zip-Fastener Ship-Between Water- This fall, Zip-Fastener Ship will “open” Sumida River!

Zip-Fastener Ship, which has been participating in Sumida River Sumi-Yume Art Project (Sumiyume) since 2018, will be coming to Sumida River again this fall. In Sumiyume, the Zip-Fastener Ship will run between Azuma Bridge and Sakura Bridge on the Sumida River, which has been a boundary line of the city since olden times, opening the water surface and bonding the two banks.

Over the past few years, as we have focused our eyes on the Sumida River, we have thought about the many stories that the river has told us, and we have looked at the “now” of the water that flows from far away and then moves on to another place. The shimmering ripples and spray of the waves, the sparkling reflection of the landscape, and the endless circulation of water. Therefore, I hope to create a Water Puzzles with everyone by capturing the expressions of water that lurk around us in images and putting them into puzzle pieces that may one day lead to each other.

“Between Water” – the undertow becomes a zipper, and the puzzle pieces show the various forms of water.

If you look at the water surface of the Sumida River for a while, you will see its expression changing moment by moment as it is affected by light and current.
Each of them will be a puzzle of water with a different appearance.

Hara Museum ARC “Bench of the Japanese Islands”

Hara Museum ARC “Bench of the Japanese Islands”Hara Museum ARC “Bench of the Japanese Islands”

I am exhibiting my work “Bench of the Japanese Islands”, in “A Nexus of Rainbows: Works from the Hara Museum and the Hara Rokuro Collections”, the first exhibition at the newly consolidated Hara Museum ARC.
A bird’s eye view of the museum grounds shows a large arc.In the courtyard located in the center of the arc, “Bench of the Japanese Islands” is placed in the same direction as the Japanese archipelago. On the floor, the annual rings of the fir tree planted when the museum first opened were drawn in line with the direction in which the tree grew.Located in the middle of Japan, the jet-black architecture with its abundant use of wood makes the subtle changes in nature due to the seasons and weather even more striking. It also reminds us of our connection and relationship with the environment.
We hope you will spend a relaxing time in the wide space filled with greenery.
We look forward to seeing you at the exhibition.

*In 1979, the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art was opened in Shinagawa, Tokyo, and in 1988, the Hara Museum ARC was opened as an annex in Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture. In January 2021, the Hara Museum, which was built as a house in 1938 and is a unique building using a Western-style building, was closed due to the support and popularity of many people.
Later, in April 2021, the two museums were integrated and reopened as the Hara Museum ARC in Shibukawa City, Gunma Prefecture.

It is said that two-thirds of Japan’s land area is covered by forests.  The trees that exist as countless “dots” in these forests draw their own arcs through interaction with the surrounding environment. The unique overlap of lines can be said to be the result of the memory of the land. If we compare the two large arcs drawn by the pavement around the perimeter of the Hara Museum ARC to the annual rings of a large tree, the beautiful architecture that makes abundant use of wood seems to be an invisible compass that has lived in the land since ancient times, revealing itself and opening up to the present. This led to the discovery of the countless small islands of Japan hidden in the individual trees that form the Japanese archipelago. I hope that people from all over the world, including Japan, will visit and sit with the “Bench of the Japanese Islands ” to visualize the centripetal force of Shibukawa as well as to feel the “power of attraction” that acts between distant places. (Yasuhiro Suzuki)

Shibuya MIYASHITA PARK Public Art “SHIBUYA HACHI COMPASS”

Shibuya MIYASHITA PARK Public Art “SHIBUYA HACHI COMPASS”

In July 2020, Shibuya’s Miyashita Park will be reborn as MIYASHITA PARK, a new complex integrating park, commerce, and a hotel through redevelopment. As a permanent public art project, I created the “SHIBUYA HACHI COMPASS” on the roof of Miyashita Park in Shibuya Ward.

In Miyashita Park, where you can see the sky, I designed a bench where you can feel the direction of the city of Shibuya with your body. There, a statue of Hachiko, a loyal dog, came early. It is looking up at Professor Ueno, who has become a star. Today, HACHI are like an endless “universe” that is passed on to people all over the world. The imagination that has grown between animals and humans for others may be calling to people’s hearts beyond national borders. Miyashita Park, which stretches from north to south along Meiji Dori Avenue, is like a compass needle that casually tells the direction to people on the street. I hope that through encounters with people from all over the world, from the neighborhood to the globe, Miyashita Park will become the “Compass of Shibuya” for the future. (Yasuhiro Suzuki)

Towada Art Center “Inter+Play: Arts Towada 10th Anniversary Exhibition”

Arts Towada celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2020. This city-wide initiative is unlike any other in Japan, promoting art throughout the city of Towada and along its main thoroughfare, Kanchogai Avenue. At the center of the Arts Towada initiative is the Towada Art Center. The museum promotes creative synergy with unforgettable art experiences, showcasing the latest in contemporary art and promoting exchange between artists, citizens, and visitors to the city.

Arts Towada has taken an approach that pursues the combination of cutting-edge contemporary expression with a universal appeal. Inter+Play, which commemorates a decade since the start of the initiative, embodies that very attitude and will be a year-long exhibition divided into three parts, each with unique content. Inter+Play is a bridge between society, the city and its architecture, and even our own bodies, inside and out. As such, each of its three parts will feature works and artists that allow visitors to go between each as freely as they please and open up new possibilities in the spaces that we inhabit.(Excerpt from the Towada Art Center WEB)

London Design Biennale 2016

London Design Biennale 2016

The first London Design Biennale will open this September at Somerset House with over 30 countries participating (7 – 27 September).I will be in charge of work display of Japan.
Nations from six continents will present newly commissioned works that explore the theme Utopia by Design.

Exhibition Overview
In works that approach existing things and familiar phenomena from a fresh perspective, Yasuhiro Suzuki raises questions about everyday life and our way of perceiving the world. Based on the idea of “looking at one thing as if it was another,” which has parallels with mitate, a traditional allusive method found in Japanese garden and tea ceremony, Suzuki connects “here and now” with “somewhere and sometime” in countless works and projects in which he discovers new relationships between things that would normally never encounter each other.
Widely hailed for his unprecedented work in the Japanese design world, Suzuki conceived of this installation for the London Design Biennale after reading about this year’s theme. He plans to create a spatial structure made up of objects of various sizes, drawings, and animation. Transcending dichotomies such as inside and outside, before and after, and part and whole, and systemic barriers such as the past, present, and future, the work suggests the importance of shifting our focus from our own place (everyday life) and considering the wider world.

“Compass of Japanese Islands” resumed sale

A compass in the shape of the Japanese archipelago,
the silhouette of which was precisely etched out from a 0.15 mm metal plate, and subsequently magnetized.
When placing it carefully into a glass filled with water, one can immediately tell the orientation of the Japanese archipelago without relying on north-south-east-west information.
It feels as if one’s body sensation is scaled up from one’s position to the life-sized Japanese archipelago.Even though just a simple mechanism, it felt quite rewarding as a tool for connecting myself with the Japanese islands by way of the Earth’s own magnetic force.(Yasuhiro Suzuki “Neighborhood Globe”)

The “Compass of Japanese Islands” which became out of stock for a while resumed sale.
